EDF Energy is an energy company. Obvious? Perhaps. However, we’re different from many other energy companies out there: we’re vertically integrated, or to put it another way, we’re involved in absolutely every part of the energy cycle.
We generate energy: around 5GW, or enough to supply 7.6% of the country’s energy, comes from our gas and coal plants, as well as our combined heat and power plants and wind farms.
We trade in energy: buying and selling ‘power’ in order to supply electricity to our customers. On top of this, we purchase gas, coal and biomass supplies to fuel our generating plants.
We distribute energy: in other words, we build, develop and maintain the actual physical networks for London, the south-east and east of England (or around 170,000km of overhead lines and underground cables). Networks that help keep the lights on for 20 million people, over a quarter of the country’s population.
And we supply energy to over 5 million customers in the UK, The company is also a key player in national infrastructure projects including management of private electricity networks serving four London airports and the Channel Tunnel Rail Link, the country’s first major new railway in 100 years.
We’re still a relatively new name in the UK energy market, but we’ve grown quickly over our short history to become a major player, and an influential voice in the industry. Today, we employ around 13,000 people and are one of the UK’s largest energy companies. We’re also part of EDF Group, one of the largest energy groups in Europe, with key businesses in France, Germany and Italy. And we have great ambitions to grow even further.
